Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, who briefly served as President Trump’s national security adviser, pleaded guilty to lying to FBI investigators in special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian officials.

ABC News initially reported through a confidant that Flynn promised “full cooperation to the Mueller team” and that he is prepared to testify that then-candidate Donald Trump “directed him to make contact with the Russians.”

However, that turned out to be untrue. ABC News later clarified that President-elect Trump directed Flynn to contact Russian officials on topics that included working jointly against ISIS.

That changes the whole story. There is nothing illegal about the Trump transition team contacting foreign officials to prepare the way for taking office.

If candidate Trump directed Flynn, then the idea that the Trump campaign colluded with Russian officials to alter the outcome of a 2016 presidential election would appear more viable.

However, it doesn’t take an expert to figure out that you cannot collude on an election that you have already won.

President Trump asked for Flynn’s resignation on Feb. 13, citing an “evolving and eroding level of trust,” per then-Press Secretary Sean Spicer.

He was the president-elect, he’d be sworn in within two months, he wanted to make sure the outgoing administration didn’t do anything to royally screw up relations with a foreign power before he had the chance to properly introduce himself to them. It’s awkward when you have a sitting president and a president-elect both trying to conduct foreign policy but it’s inevitable in a system where the winner of the election doesn’t immediately take power on election night. No one’s going to jail over it.

So the “when” is crucial. And yet ABC apparently botched the distinction when Brian Ross told their audience today that “candidate” Trump ordered Flynn to chat with Russia. That suggested contact with Moscow was made before Americans voted, which would be the strongest evidence yet that Trump himself was interested in collusion, a revelation that might potentially imperil his presidency.
